Living in a developed country means that our body is constantly being bombarded with free radicals every second of the day. Free radicals are highly reactive molecular particles resulting from normal metabolism and from damaging substances in our environment. They cause oxidation (ageing) of our body cells and contribute to a range of health problems and diseases that have a negative impact on our body’s functioning and our quality of life.

In order to combat the impact free radicals have on our body, we must consume adequate amounts of antioxidants. Antioxidants are ‘free radical scavengers’ that are produced by our body and may also be found in small amounts in the foods we eat, particularly in fruits, vegetables and unprocessed oils. We can also get them from various antioxidant supplements.

Since it is virtually impossible to quench the ‘free radical load’ that our body experiences on a daily basis through its natural production of antioxidants and through our diet, supplementation with powerful antioxidants becomes essential.

As a result, researchers at BCN have developed one of the most powerful antioxidant formulations available. It is called Super 7 Blend and is a unique combination of 7 concentrated extracts from the world’s most potent ‘Superfoods’, including: Acai berry, Elderberry, Pomegranate, Goji berry, Noni, Cranberry and Red Raspberry.

These functional foods have a range of health-promoting benefits that have been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years and have now been validated by scientific research.

BCN’s Super 7 Blend has one of the highest ORAC values of any product available on the market today (over 10,000 ORAC units per 5 gram serve!).

Here is a summary of each of the 7 Superfoods:

Elderberry

This berry is native to various parts of Europe, Asia and North America and contains a number of important compounds, particularly anthocyanins, which are powerful antioxidants and have immune-stimulating properties.

Scientific studies have shown that Elderberry has the following beneficial effects:

  • A safe and cost-effective treatment for influenza
  • Lowers (bad) cholesterol
  • Stimulates the immune system
  • Protects endothelial cells against oxidative stress, which decreases vascular disease risk

Acai Berry

The Acai berry is found in the Amazon forest and has been used for centuries by the natives there. It contains anthocyanins and proanthocyanins, which include  polyphenols and flavanoids. These are powerful antioxidants.

The Acai berry has the following effects that are validated by scientific research:

  • A vasodilating effect on blood vessels, which may assist with lowering blood pressure and reducing heart disease risk

  • Neuroprotective effects

  • Improves lipid profiles

  • Decreases blood pressure and cardiovascular disease risk

There is limited published research on the benefits of Goji berry, but it has been shown to have the following beneficial effects:

  • Has anti-cancer activity
  • Increases plasma zeaxanthin levels, which may assist in the prevention of age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Lowers blood lipids
  • Helps stabilise blood sugar levels

Noni

Noni comes from the fruit of the Indian mulberry and is often found on the islands of Tahiti and Hawaii. It has been used in folk remedies for over 2,000 years and has a broad range of therapeutic effects. Noni contains a mixture of anthraquinones, organic acids, xeronine, vitamins and minerals.

There is quite a substantial amount of research available demonstrating the health benefits of Noni, which are as follows:

  • Anti-cancer properties

  • Improves blood lipid profiles

  • Increases energy (has anti-fatigue and endurance properties)

  • Has suppressive effects on parasitic infections

  • Has pain-relieving and sedative properties

Cranberry

The Cranberry is a commonly grown fruit in the US and Canada and has been used by natives for food, ceremonies and medicinally for centuries. Cranberries contain various vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients including, anthocyanidin flavonoids and polyphenol antioxidants.

There is a good body of research to support the following benefits of Cranberries:

  • Prevention and treatment of Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

  • Demonstrates bacterial anti-adhesive properties

  •  May assist in the prevention of dental plaque and cavities

  • Improves blood lipid profiles and reduces CVD risk

  • Demonstrates potent cancer fighting properties

Red Raspberry

Red Raspberries are believed to be native to Europe but are now widely cultivated around the world. It is the highest known source of Ellagic acid, which is a powerful polyphenol antioxidant. It also contains a variety of other flavonoids.

The research shows that Red Raspberries have the following properties:

  • Demonstrates anti-microbial effects

  • Inhibits cancer cell proliferation and tumour formation

  • Has powerful anti-inflammatory effects
